these three sculptures were created alongside a series of paintings, drawings, and a film that used a classical musical score as the starting point. in all of the works, the musical notes were translated into a series of letters (a-g) and the resulting lists of letters became a score for numerical decisions (a=1, b=2, etc). in the sculptures, this translated into measurements (all 'a' pieces the same length, all 'b' pieces the same length, etc.) as well as color choices.

each piece was built intuitively, beginning with a piece of wood corresponding to the first note and wiring it to a piece corresponding to the second note, and then adding the third, fourth, and so on.

although formally they are coded visual translations of a series of musical notes (just like models of dna, etc.);
a number of other influences have found intuitive ways into the works, including a 2005 visit to corbusier's chapel at ronchamp, rudolf steiner's goetheanum and his writings on architecture, a book on music at the paris exhibition of 1889, giuseppe terrangi's danteum, alexander graham bell's kites, myron stout's writings, and alvaro siza's serpentine gallery pavillion.
